“To walk around, to walk afar” /\ anti-gentrification struggles in Rio de Janeiro
July 26, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm BST
Join us for a discussion on housing struggles in Rio de Janeiro. Cristina Ribas and Lucas S. Icó have been involved in a research and visual arts militant work with Vila Autódromo community in Rio de Janeiro – a community of originally 600 families that resisted eviction previous to the Olympics – this is the immediate community closest to the Olympic Park. The process was very traumatic for all the residents, and in the midst of resistance cultural production was a tool of struggle, leveraging narratives, sensibilities, desires, partnerships. Cristina and Lucas developed a glossary of the struggle in 2017 and recently have produced another series of work (with the participation and filming of Sol Archer https://www.solarcher.co.uk/index.php/project/vila-autodromo/) , departing from a walk with Denise (one of the inhabitants who walks as a therapeutic practice) and from theatre and improvisation practices remembering the plays that were produced in the community more then 15 years ago. They will show extracts of the videos, the glossary and the posters that were produced recently for an exhibition in France. The project has been developed in dialogue with networks of resistance against gentrification in Rio de Janeiro and against violent exploitation of territories and lives. Cristina will be in London for a while and will present the work they’ve done for inspiration and experience sharing.
