Altavista Arkive. Event 3. LA ESCUELA QUE [Ø NO Ø] EXISTE (open)

Described as ‘the bastard daughter of the Public Education System in Mexico’ by its current principal, the Altavista Co-Operative Federal High School was established in 1967 following student demands to continue on from their secondary school studies. After several demonstrations and continuous social disobedience, the Altavista Secondary School was occupied by students & teachers. Amongst those integral to this project were a group of ‘refugee’ educationalists; active members of the Mexican Communist Party who had graduated from the Teacher Training Rural Schools established during the ‘socialist education’ period of Lázaro Cárdenas in the 1930s. These teachers, survivors of an armed attack on Madera military base in 1965, remained resolutely committed to these long standing revolutionary principles. Altavista continues to this day to be regarded as an expression of co-operative models of education and has struggled in the face of an often violent political context, to maintain itself as an open and self-organised space.
Throughout October 2014 and across a series of arkive aktivations, Diego Salvador Rios, along with current Altavista teaching staff and members of MayDay Rooms, will work with historical material associated with the school: original constitutional documents, films, photographs, interviews, banners and ephemera. These materials were gathered together over the last few years by Diego, as part of a Praxis Laboratory, and seek to connect political and educational struggles in Latin America with world-wide libertarian educational initiatives and contemporary activist debates. This phase of the project aims to build on experiences and studies, and to link these to material processes already underway at MayDay Rooms. This process will be continued at Altavista High School, Juarez City in 2015.
EVENT THREE: LA ESCUELA QUE [Ø NO Ø] EXISTE
After a flood in 1994 which almost destroyed the Altavista High School, the main agents in charge of running the school withdrew their support. The school had been badly damaged and there were no funds to carry out the much needed repairs. A new group of young left-wing teachers, who had been teaching at the school, took this chance to get together in a non-hierarchical and self-organised way. These teachers, along with current students, made makeshift repairs and began to run the school in line with the original libertarian intentions first voiced in 1967. After 20 years of experimental practices that showed no reverence for public education policies, the expectations changed. In this session Armida Valverde, current principal of the High School and one of the key players in this phase of the school’s history, will be joining us via skype. The session is intended to reflect upon the efficacy of current schooling and develop a series of activities and [Ø non Ø]-educational practices to be applied in the Praxis Laboratory at Altavista High School in 2015.

Descrita como ‘la hija bastarda de la educación pública en México’ por su actual directora la Preparatoria Federal por CoOperación Altavista nació en 1967 como respuesta a la demanda social que exigía un lugar para que la primera generación de egresados de la Escuela Secundaria Altavista tuviera un lugar para continuar sus estudios de bachillerato. Después de varias protestas y continuas manifestaciones de desobediencia civil el edificio de la Secundaria Altavista fue ocupado y entre profesores de la secundaria y padres de familia activaron la primer etapa de la Preparatoria Altavista en los últimos pisos del edificio de la Secundaria. Heredera de la tradición revolucionaria mexicana dentro el grupo de profesores fundadores se encontraban militantes activos del Partido Comunista, sobrevivientes del ataque al cuartel militar de Ciudad Madera, Chihuahua, en su mayoría egresados de las Normales Rurales de Salaices y Saucillo, establecidas durante el periodo de la ‘educación socialista’ en tiempos de Cárdenas. La Preparatoria Altavista es hoy en día una de las pocas escuelas por cooperación en seguir activa, y lucha por mantenerse como un espacio abierto y auto-organizado en medio de un contexto represivo y constantemente políticamente violentado como es Ciudad Juárez.
En Octubre del 2014 Diego Salvador Rios junto con miembros de MayDay Rooms así como maestros y trabajadores de la Preparatoria Altavista trabajarán con material histórico asociado a la escuela como son documentos originales de la fundación, películas, fotografías, entrevistas y objetos colectados por Diego en los últimos años. Las aktivaciones al arkivo buscan conectar luchas educativas y políticas de América Latina con iniciativas de educación libertaria y debates contemporáneos sobre activismo a nivel mundial. Esta fase del Projecto Altavista busca construir experiencias y estudios, que puedan conectarse con material previamente depositado en MayDay Rooms, este proceso continuará en la Preparatoria Altavista, Ciudad Juárez en 2015 como parte del Laboratorio de Prácticas.
TERCER EVENTO: LA ESCUELA QUE [Ø NO Ø] EXISTE
Después de una inundación en 1994, la cual casi destrozó por completo la preparatoria. Los principales agentes a cargo del soporte a la escuela retiraron sus apoyos. La escuela quedo en severamente dañada y sin ningún recurso que pudiera ayudar para su reparación. Un grupo joven de profesores de izquierda recién integrados a la preparatoria se unió y reestructuró la escuela bajo un sistema libre de jerarquías y que promueve la auto-organización. Estos profesores juntos con estudiantes hicieron las reparaciones básicas para reactivar la preparatoria y retomar la línea libertaria que caracterizó el periodo de fundación de la preparatoria en 1967. Despues de 20 años de prácticas experimentales que no se han alineado a las políticas y demandas por parte de la Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP), sus expectativas han cambiado. En esta sesión Armida Valverde, actual directora de la preparatoria y agente clave en esta más reciente fase de la escuela se unirá via skype. La sesión busca reflexionar sobre la eficacia actual de la escuela y desarrollar una serie de actividades y prácticas [Ø NO Ø]-educativas que se realizarán durante el Laboratorio de Prácticas en la Preparatoria Altavista en 2015.
