Aint I A Woman Collective: Academically speaking, black feminism….
November 11, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm GMT
The Ain’t I A Woman Collective is a black feminist organisation, which aims to centre the voices of women with African ancestry in Europe and beyond. We believe that there is a need for more creative spaces for black women’s voices, writing and well-being, and work to constantly carve out such space. The overarching aim of the event is to explore, through discussion, whether black feminist academic books have a role in the black feminist agenda of young black women. If not, what next of academic books on black feminism? If yes, how are they used and are there ways to increase usage or do the books (content) need changing?

Through an engaging discussion with a dynamic panel, we will be exploring whether black feminist academic literature has a role in the feminist agenda of black women. If yes, how is literature used and are there ways to increase engagement or does the content need a change of direction? If not, what is the next step for academic literature on black feminism? At this event, guests will have a chance to discuss the role academia has had in the development and evolution of black feminism, particularly whether academic literature on the subject has been constructive in building inclusivity amongst women of African ancestry. If it hasn’t, the question is: should we transform the discourse or reinvent it completely?
