ASH (Architects for Social Housing) have organised a collective reading of the Tory Housing and Planning Bill, from which we will produce a written statement from the position of the housing movement. We aim to produce a short summary of its contents and their implications, and distribute this as widely as possible among the people who live on housing estates and are threatened by Tory housing policy. We want to expose the political motivations driving the Bill, rather than viewing it as a reaction to what is a manufactured housing ‘crisis’. Above all, want to offer practical measures that can be taken at various levels. We intend to use this statement to apply pressure on Mayoral candidates in what will be a crucial struggle for the implementation of the Bill’s measures, as well as Councils and Housing Associations whose autonomy from government the Bill attacks. In addition to members of ASH, the statement will be written by members of Concrete Action, Class War, and Unite Housing Workers.
