Film Screening: De Cierta Manera w/ Brixton Community Cinema, CAIWU and MayDay Rooms
February 24 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm GMT
Mayday Rooms is happy to collaborate with CAIWU and Brixton Community Cinema on a screening of Sara Gomez’s “De Cierta Manera” – The first Cuban feature film directed by a woman; a docu-romance-drama exploring life in a newly socialist society.
A fascinating docu-romance-drama and critical ethnographic study of a new couple, Yolanda and Mario. The film assesses the complexities of intersectional, marginalised lives in 1970s Cuba through a factual narrative that contextualises the relationship, the community, and the tensions of life in a new socialist society. This was the first Cuban feature film directed by a woman and the last directed by Sara Gómez (1942-1974), who died suddenly while De Cierta Manera was being edited.
The screening will be followed by a presentation of archival materials related to the London-based Latin American Workers’ Association. Members of LAWAS will join us during the event to talk about their lived experiences of participating in migrant workers’ struggles in the UK.
