Our speaker for Social Change discussion on Thursday 25th February will be Jerome Lewis. He is an anthropologist with a long experience of egalitarian societies.
His talk will be on ‘An enduring egalitarian civilisation’
It is often argued that egalitarian societies are fragile and unstable. However, emerging evidence from a variety of disciplines suggests the extraordinary duration and resilience of an egalitarian Central African hunter-gatherer Civilisation over many thousands of years. The talk will trace out how how this civilisation can be traced, not through archaeological evidence, but by musicological studies and the implications that artistic production has for expressing ideals and forming aesthetic standards for non-hierarchically organised action.
