Global warming and social movements. Talk by Gabriel Levy
The international agreement on climate change signed in Paris in December aimed at deception on a grand scale. Those in charge claimed that action was being taken to slow down global warming, while they created conditions for it to accelerate. It is a commonplace on the left to say that the blame lies with neo-liberalism; this talk will argue, by contrast, that this is a crisis of capitalist states and statehood. The talk will mention in outline: the historical background to the current over-consumption of fossil fuels that is the underlying cause of global warming; and the challenges presented by global warming to movements of social liberation and how they could respond.
