Mental Healthcare Beyond Institutions: Film Screening + Discussion with Red Therapy
March 31, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm BST
MayDay Rooms presents a series of workshops exploring radical pedagogies which produce new ways of learning and activate alternative political futures. This month’s workshop will be facilitated by Red Therapy!
How can we care for each other through unusual or difficult emotional experiences? For many, hearing voices, having other unusual sensory perceptions, or experiencing crisis seem to demand an institutional response, but could this be a failure of our collective imagination and skills? Join Red Therapy for a short film screening and discussion on ways of caring outside of traditional psychiatric or psychotherapeutic institutions.
To begin the event we will be showing two films: excerpts from We’re Not Mad, We’re Angry (7 minutes, 1986), a film created and edited by a group of current and former psychiatric patients and screened on Channel 4 in the late 1980s, and What You See Is Where You’re At (28 minutes, 2001), a short film that explores the experiences of patients at Kingsley Hall, an experimental therapeutic community established by R.D. Laing and others in the 1960s.
Please note that We’re Not Mad, We’re Angry contains some discussion of psychiatric violence.
About the organisers
Red Therapy is a new abolitionist collective based at the MayDay Rooms. We were drawn together by a shared interest in how and why we make sense of difficult and unusual emotional experiences in the way we currently do, and a desire to think beyond existing psychiatric and psychotherapeutic systems and practices.
