On/Off Allotments

November 7, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm GMT

On Saturday November 7, 2015, MayDay Rooms, along with three of the founding members of Four Corners (Jo Davis, Ron Peck and Wilf Thust) will screen and discuss their 1976 film, On Allotments*. Shot on location in Newham East London, On Allotments might be regarded as a companion piece to the earlier Four Corners film, Railman (1976) – bringing together the place of work with leisure/time outside work. Both have now been deposited at MDR, along with other significant Four Corners material, and to mark their accession we would like to take this opportunity to experiment with the process of annotating (creating metadata) for their online cataloguing and distribution. To facilitate this, MDR now has a dedicated film platform developed by the founder members of Pirate Cinema (Berlin) and Pan.do/ra https://0xdb.org/
The day will begin at 1pm with lunch (donations) and informal discussion on the origins and background to the film, followed by a screening. Later in the afternoon, joined by other invited guests (tbc) we will view the film a second time, with the aim of adding metadata (e.g. on production, context, location, etc.) to the website and exploring the search tools of the new MDR film platform.
*On Allotments (Four Corners Films: Jo Davis, Mary Pat Leece, Ron Peck and Wilf Thust. Colour, 31 mins. 1976) was filmed in conjunction with the Greater London Arts Association, Newham Council and members of the East Ham Allotments Association and covers the daily activities of urban community ‘gardeners’ facing the threat of enclosure and ‘redevelopment’.
