Peter Linebaugh opening the box on Zerowork and NEPA news at the Round About Midnight event.
Hosted by MayDay Rooms at the Marx Memorial Library on the 28th of January 2013
MDR Bulletin for the day:
Three important personal collections of radical history – Wages for Housework, Zerowork, and The Committee for Academic Freedom in Africa (CAFA) – are being assembled for dispatch to MayDay Rooms in London. They document respectively a movement, a journal and an organisation, each of which marked a significant intervention in the context of the new conditions facing opponents of capital and patriarchy during the long aftermath of the sixties. Together they form tributaries that flowed into and out of the work of the Midnight Notes Collective and some of the journal’s best known theoretical voices – Silvia Federici, Peter Linebaugh and George Caffentzis.
MayDay Rooms would like to invite you to participate in an ongoing conversation with George and Silvia and Peter when they converge in London later this month to ‘open the boxes’ (they have been sifting and assembling relevant materials from their personal papers over recent weeks and months) and begin the collaborative process of unpacking and situating this historical material related to Midnight Notes, starting in this first phase with its tributaries.
The plan is to focus, over three consecutive afternoons, on each of the three collections in turn, Zerowork with Peter (on Monday January 28), Wages for Housework, with Silvia (on Tuesday January 29), and CAFA with George (on Wednesday January 30). We can anticipate that these histories will reflect/refract, inter alia, radical feminist and autonomist strands within the Italian left, the Black Power and prison movements in the US, antinomian English social history, anti-colonial struggles in Africa and the Americas and the direct action traditions of the anti-nuclear and peace movements; yet there will be other strands and connections we cannot imagine until they reveal themselves in our collective engagement with the documents themselves.
As with the Anti-University project initiated in early 2012, this form of engagement is, we want to make clear, a key part of MayDay Rooms’ formation as it prepares to move into its premises at 88 Fleet Street in the coming months. Our working sessions this January are conducted in collaboration with the School of Walls and Space in Copenhagen where, earlier in the month, discussions between participants from MayDay Rooms and Midnight Notes will start.
