Worker/Artist Part 1: Working inside a political movement
October 16, 2015 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm BST
On Friday and Saturday (October 16-17) Matthijs de Bruijne and Cecilia Vallejos will visit MayDay Rooms to discuss their work with the Cleaners Union of the Netherlands (part of the Federation FNV http://schoongenoeg.nu) with the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB). Key to this practice has been a dialogue about how ‘visualisation’ – of ideas, language, campaigns – can support and strengthen the collective demands of workers.
Although this event has been principally set up as an information exchange with the IWGB, all are invited to the Friday session ‘Working inside a political movement’, where Matthijs and Cecilia will provide a detailed account (in English) of their experiences as artists in connecting with a political movement.
Echoing the event ‘Artistic Strategy and Workers Struggle’, organised by MDR in collaboration with artist Giovanni Rubino earlier this year http://maydayrooms.org/event/artistic-strategy-workers-struggle/ , in ‘Working Inside a political movement’, we hope to continue to question the lines of ‘specialisation’ and ‘skill’, and the various modes of practice, which are taken to separate cultural from other workers; and to draw connections between the many groups contributing to MayDay Rooms, as well as their geographic and political contexts (here the Netherlands and Latin America via Britain/London).
Talking Objects will take place on Saturday 17, feeding into the Language Exchange as a workshop for IWGB workers only (in Spanish and English).
