We are excited to announce that we will be running a regular feature in DOPE magazine to showcase the MDR collection and emphasise the importance of learning from history for today’s political struggles!
The first article Fight Back with the Claimants Union! by Georgia Anderson and Cathy Leech examines the Claimants Union movement, which was made up of radical, grassroots organisations run ‘by and for’ benefits claimants, who were active in Britain in the 1970s and 80s. At the height of the movement, there were around 100 autonomous local branches across the country, organised into a national federation. Drawing from the movement’s rich archive of handbooks, pamphlets, and newsletters, the article explore how the movement grew so quickly in the early 70s, its core demands and tactics, and its legacy today.
