Psychology Group

February 15, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm GMT

We are a self-organised group of non-professionals aiming to work together in a non-hierarchical way to consider psychological aspects of being. Inspired by the writing of psychologist David Smail, we are interested in how emotional distress may be understood as a collective phenomenon, rooted in the social, ecological and historical, especially within power relations; as opposed to something that originates solely within the individual.
We hope to take care of each other within the group through meeting regularly for discussions that develop over time. Through conversations with invited guest speakers, excursions, and micro-political actions, we will try to create a safe space for sharing thoughts and various experiences around: – Causes of distress within society – Coping mechanisms and ways of subverting this distress. – The relationship between understanding emotional experience and engaging in politics/ activism. The nature of the group encompasses friendship and community, sharing references of interest but moving beyond a reading group. Generally our meetings are only for a set group of regular members, but we may well invite guest speakers to discuss their ideas.
